General Student Employment Regulations

Dual Positions

Students may be employed at more than one location on campus. Federal Work-Study employees who need more than one job to earn their full FWS award need to coordinate work hours with supervisors so that neither earnings nor hours of work limits are exceeded. Students can work a maximum of 20 hours while classes are in session and 40 hours during breaks. Departments may impose conditions or terms of employment that prohibit dual jobs provided that those departments offer students reasonable capability of earning their Federal Work-Study awards.

Employment of Relatives

The College seeks to hire and retain the most qualified persons for all positions and from time to time hires persons who are related to a Lewis & Clark employee. It is a conflict of interest for employees to serve in a direct supervisory capacity over a relative or a dependent. For the purposes of this policy, "relative" means parent, child, spouse, brother, sister, in-law, and step-relative. This policy also applies to student employees.

Interpretation of Policies

Should any questions arise over the interpretation of these policies, the Director of the Student Financial Services will be responsible for resolving disputes.

Maximum Hours Allowed

It is a Lewis & Clark College policy that students may not work more than eight (8) hours per day or twenty (20) hours per week. Students may be employed up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. Students must have sufficient funds to cover earnings during the break. Students may work during evenings and weekends as long as the department has regular evening and/or weekend hours and students have adequate supervision.

Calculation of Available Hours

Actual hours worked per week depends on the total amount of students' awards per semester, the rate of pay, and the number of weeks in the term. With their supervisors' assistance, it is the responsibility of Federal Work-Study students to determine individual hours available to work each semester. The decision regarding the actual number of hours worked will be made by supervisors with consideration for the maximum hours allowed, the requirements of the position, and students' availability. The FWS Confirmation Form will reflect students' funding by term for the academic year to help the planning process for departments and students.

Overtime

No overtime is allowed at any time using Federal Work-Study funds! Any hours reported on the timecard that exceed the maximum allowed will not be covered with FWS funds. These hours will be charged 100 percent to departments' budgets.

Holidays

Students are not allowed to work during official holidays unless departments are open, and then only in emergency situations.
