The Ray Warren Symposium on Race and Ethnic Studies began in 2004 as a way to honor Ray Warren, a Lewis & Clark alumnus who served as Director of Ethnic Student Services from 1992 until his death in 2004. A tireless advocate and careful listener, Warren left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike.

How do racial ideologies intersect with and inform ideas about crime, punishment, justice, and state authority? The 10th Annual Ray Warren Symposium (November 13-15) will focus on these pressing issues of civil rights and justice by analyzing racial ideologies and the contours of the carceral state. -
“Why Is That Black Hunger Games Character Black? Looking At Race, Identity, and the Interwebs”
The 9th symposium featured comedian Baratunde Thurston, author of How To Be Black, a New York Times bestseller. Thurston travels the world, speaking and advising on the subjects of our digital future and storytelling, satire and democracy, and race and politics. -
The Miseducation of Multiculturalism
What is multiculturalism? What is the place of this idea in education? The 8th symposium explored the meanings of multiculturalism in the U.S. and abroad, looking closely at the controversies and complexities surrounding this word, as well as the policies that have emerged to promote and support the idea. -
And Justice For All
Featuring work from Lewis & Clark student artists and artists in the greater Portland community, the 7th symposium challenged viewers to think about what social justice really means in today’s world.In this video, representatives from Portland’s Muslim Educational Trust—an organization with an Islamic school and educational and advocacy programs—offer their thoughts on the state of racism in America today and their hopes for encouraging dialogue and increasing understanding in the future.

The Politics of Hybrid Identities
The 6th symposium expressed complex issues of hybrid identities of race and ethnicity. In this video, Parasa Chanramy ’10 explains the popular Race Monologues event through which students explore their experiences with race, ethnicity, and personal identity with poetry and prose. -
Landscapes of Migration
For the 5th symposium, artists shared their experiences with and personal feelings about diverse aspects of migration, including forced, free, and illegal immigration, religious and cultural migration, and the hardships suffered by refugees when moving between countries.

Uncommon Journeys - Common Dreams
Student and community artists challenged traditional views of multiculturalism at the 4th symposium, moving us beyond simplistic notions of race. Oregon’s poet laureate Lawson Fusao Inada described how hearing jazz in World War II internment camps influenced his writing and life. -
“I, Too, Sing America”: Different Roots, Shared Future
At the 3rd symposium, Françoise Duréssé presented herself as queen nappy, transforming the complexity of her personal experiences into a poetic dialog. Queen Nappy juxtaposes collages of racist dialogues, printed text, images from history,popular culture, and contemporary events into a visual context. Through this lens, we may examine the discourse of racism. -
Rhythms of Change
At the 2nd symposium, Playwright, Shoshone-Bannock Tribe Member, and Oregon Historical Society Speaker Ed Edmo gave an interactive performance of Northwest Native American stories. -
Finding Common Ground
Former advisor to President Clinton Dale Minami gave the keynote address at the 1st symposium. -
Ray Warren ’65, MAT ’71
Ray Warren once wrote, “My vision is to do something positive with my life to improve race relations in the Portland community, to leave this a better world.” The late associate dean of students and director of ethnic student services at Lewis & Clark College succeeded on both counts. Read more.
