Waseda

In the early 1990’s university officials from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan visited Portland to inquire about possible exchange program sites. A consortium of Portland-area colleges and universities agreed to work cooperatively to explore program possibilities. In 1991 their work and collaboration resulted in what became known as the Waseda/Oregon Summer Program.

The Waseda/Oregon Summer Program, with an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on the comparative cultures of Japan and the US, brought 45 US and 45 Waseda University students to live and study together on the Lewis & Clark campus.

The Waseda/Oregon Summer Program operated successfully on the Lewis & Clark campus from 1992 through 1999. Approximately 225 Waseda University students participated in the program in the 1990’s.

In the fall of 2002 Waseda University officials invited Lewis & Clark to join its Collaborative Education in Study Abroad (CESA) initiative, a program designed to encourage increasing numbers of Waseda University students to study abroad. The program’s title was changed in 2004 to the TSA (Thematic Studies Abroad) program.  It is now known as Customized

Lewis & Clark was one of eight institutions initially participating with Waseda in its TSA initiative. In August of 2003 the first group of nine Waseda University students arrived at Lewis & Clark. The theme of the program was “International Relations of The North Pacific Rim.” It was a great success. But, in the fall of 2007 the theme of the program was changed to “Building a Global Community.”
